Photography Workshop for Beginners
This course is perfect for beginners looking to learn the basics of photography to take your images to the next level through a practical hands-on workshop approach!
Professional photographer Paul Corey covers everything you need to know on how to create high-quality professional images. Using simple techniques with minimal equipment, available light, backgrounds and unlimited imagination, you will be coached on how to compose, shoot and transform potentially everyday scenes into arresting images. Furthermore, you will learn how to use (free) editing apps and software on your phone or laptop for that polished look.
With each week covering a different module of learning and a focus on the practical, at the end of this workshop you will walk away with ready-to-go quality images and the know how to create a professional finish. Module Outlines (Read more). Each week you will you be given a ‘homework assignment’ which we will review and discuss the following week. You will also receive easy to follow references cards on the various topics covered to keep and use as you continue to explore the endless world of photography.
Whether it’s for capturing those special moments with family and friends, landscapes, an online store, website, advertising and social media content, this ‘do-it-yourself course’ will equip you with all the tools to produce beautiful images.
As a bonus, on completion of the workshop, you will also get to choose a favourite image that Paul will print and mount for you to take away!
What will I learn?
Week 1: Camera & Lenses
This module takes look at the equipment you will use, covering cameras, how they function and when to take advantage of the broad range of lenses available to you.
We will also discuss:
- What you want to achieve over the 8 weeks
- What is photography and why we take pictures
- What are the different parts of a camera
- Getting organized/ the power of lists
- Assigned ‘homework’
Week 2: Exposure & Metering
Accurate exposure (light and dark) is the basis for all photography and this module. As a professional or beginner you will be able to capture any subject consistently and with growing confidence.
Week 3: Composition
Composition is the way in which something is put together or arranged: the combination of parts or elements that make up something. Elements of composition are patterns, texture, symmetry, asymmetry, depth of field, lines, curves, frames, contrast, colour, viewpoint, depth, negative space, filled space, foreground, background, visual tension, shapes. We will learn to use one or more of these elements to create a composition that works for your image.
Week 4: Focal Length, Focus and Sharpness
Week 5: Shutter & Aperture
Learn how to control your camera and capture the images you have always imagined. Introducing previsualisation techniques and providing an in-depth understanding of the settings available through your camera to achieve what you want, when you want.
Week 6: Colour & Light
After understanding photographic equipment and exposure, light and colour is explored as defining factors in good photography. Refine your ability to previsualize, see and think like a camera. What is the best lighting? This module takes an in-depth look at natural and artificial lighting and how you can use these to your advantage. Explored in the context of portraiture, this knowledge is applied to all genres of photography and it is a crucial part of any good photographer’s education.
Week 7: Digital Editing
Since the darkroom, post-production and printing has been a defining part of all photography. This module addresses how to get the best out of your images when it comes time to edit and print your work. We will look at free and paid editing apps to use on your phone or laptop.
Week 8: Review of Photos and Exhibition
At the end of the workshop there will be a recap of what you have learned over the course and show a short exhibition of each individual’s best work. You will also receive a mounted print of your favourite image to take away!
